He's not stupid...he's just using faith to make a buck. He may be dillusional, a bastard...but certainly not stupid if he's managed to convince over 6 thousand people to shell out without...you know...proof of oil.
Of course, now that I've said this, he's going to strike it rich.

The people giving him the money are too trusting though. That said, each of the people who give that guy money are *smarter* than any person who buys lottery tickets - the odds of this guy finding oil in Isreal, low as they are, are far higher than most of those 'pick a number' lottery tickets. Over the long run, $3 or so every week or less on a lottery ticket turns into a pile of money lost with nothing to show for it.
