Because mountains provide strength and prosperity!!! -_-*

See, the Federal goverment in China (also called the Central government) is generally staffed with educated, competent people dedicated to advancing China into modernity. The county governments on the other hand are filled with ignorant, corrupt, backwater hicks. Want an example of why a strong central government is a good thing?

And, before me and Toze get into an argument on states rights, I'd like to point out that the Unitary system of government is just as flawed, if not moreso than the Confedrate system. That's why a group of reasonably intelligent, educated men came up with the Federal system of government. The goal of which being the balancing of states rights with a need for uniformity of government.

Let's just go with what we know to be true.

Governments are full of politicians.

Polititians of course, are like diapers. They need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

Heh, true.

I'd say the problem isn't that the local hicks have bad ideas- they have as many bad ideas as federales- but that they've got too much power to implement them.

Me, I'm leaning more and more into Ayn Rand'ism - if the people there had any power, shit like this wouldn't be tolerated (see: funded).

Preview sounds interesting, but more like totalitarianism under a different name than capitalism - heck, I don't even think there's been a capitalist society on the planet for at least 70'ish years.

But yeah, looks like a fun read.

*edit*

Actually, the book seems quite pro-capitalist - the society seems to be socialist mixed-economy in nature, individual freedoms are lacking (the last-name thing), criminal means are used to advance personal profit (assassination, etc), and business, supported by governments (therefore, being non-capitalist businesses) have undue influence and control over peoples lives (seemingly accepted by the government).

Capitalism, in contrast, is a social system *based* on the recognition of individual rights, of the freedom of individuals, that property can be owned by individuals, and of the existence of an objective theory of values (individual liberty being 'good', etc).

What seems to be described in the book, however, is the lack of that, that is, a lack of capitalism, whereas the pro-capitalist protagonist seems to be striving and fighting to establish capitalist values (individual freedom, etc.)

*checks to see if library has it*
