Post Help me help my library's animated collection
Well anyone who has checked my profile knows that I am technically a librarian. Now because of recent events (Read: I completely geeked out with several patrons) I am now the default graphic novel/animated film guy. So I have been tasked with coming up with a list of good animated films that my branch can purchase. After going through my personal collection I find myself in need of opinions and suggestions on what I should put in my list.

Now I must add a few caveats because we have a high number of patrons age 15 and under.

1) Ultraviolence is to be avoided. But I'm less worried about this because of several other series like "Lost" or "CSI" which will be on the same shelf.

2) T&A is to be kept to a minimum. This is the one I will likely get yelled at for, but I can at least partially cover my rear if I need to.

Now here is Ver.1 of my list. Note that ? indicate something I think is borderline.

Gargoyles
Darkwing Duck
Tailspin
Duck tales
Chip and Dales Rescue Rangers
Gummi Bears
Mobile Suit Gundam Original Series
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083

I would put a ? by El Hazard for the OAV series, just because of the hotsprings scenes. That and some people might get put off by the Fatora/Alielle relationship. The TV series is good for it though.

I'd all so recommed anything in the DC Animated Universe (Batman, Superman & Justice League) animated series. Any animate film by Miyazaki. Record of Lodoss War is a classic. Fruits Basket, Azumanga Daioh, and Nadesico wouldn't be bad either since they're generally safe. I'd want to say Dominion Tank Police is safe but it's been so long since I've seen it.

Gargoyles always gets an A+ in my vote

I strongly recommend the Marvel Essentials books. $20 to $30 a pop, they're huge volumes of golden and silver age Marvel. Spiderman, X-Men, Iron Man, Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four, etc. I've got a couple hundred dollar's worth, and they're great reading. Only problem is, they're black and white on newsprint, so it's likely some rugrat's going to think they're a coloring book.

And also, most of the early stuff was during or just after McCarthy, so they're as squeaky-clean as comics can be.
(assuming you don't mind seeing Beast call Jean Grey "wench" when he runs out of synonyms for "female"... :P)

DraxelBethlehem - Thanks for reminding me about the El hazard episode, it completely slipped my mind. Also the DCAU is already being incorperated, should have mentioned it before but most modern animation with good reviews are going to be within our system soon if they aren't already. I'm not too sure if we can get Miyazaki works that haven't been licensed so I'll bring that up with my boss separately.

Tozetre - We're on the same wavelenght there. First thing I did was mention the Essentials books. Oddly enough there haven't been any coloring issues involving graphic novels(by children anyway) since I've been there, they just have a tendency to fall apart.

Thanks for the help so far.

Also, wtf are you not doing with the Ghibli films on there?

Disney released the N.A. versions.
They're GHIBLI.
You want a list?

There not on the list because we have those already.

My recommendations:

-Avatar: The Last Airbender, should be easy enough to find, and is better than a lot of anime out there right now, IMHO.
-Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind: Trade Paper Back - the manga is amazing
-Dirty Pair - Project Eden is hillarious and awesome, but the others I'd hand-pick as some are pretty fan-service-intensive
-Manga of Star Wars: With covers by Adam Warren
- READ OR DIE! the OVA at LEAST. The manga is also very cool.
- Wolf's Rain
- Samurai 7
- Black Heaven
- Jin Roh

Detonator Orgun was really good, but has "80's Anime" nudity/fanservice and blood/violence. If they can withstand Akira then this is gold.

Oh, and FYI, Dominion Tank Police = Wins, but it does have expanding penis-mines. :P

Seconded.

I recommend against anything by Takahashi, fabulous as it is. Tits everywhere. Takahashi never has to GTFO.

I also recommend against Sailor Moon manga. There's some topless-girl-child-with-unicorn-prince scenes that are, uh, not appropriate for kids.

OOOH OOOOH OOOOOOOOOOOOOH!
Doug TenNapel, who did Earthworm Jim and Sockbaby, does comics.
About robots.
And dinosaurs.
And aliens.
And time/space travellers.
And time-space travelling dinosaur alien robot cowboys.

-Avatar: The Last Airbender, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind: Trade Paper Back-

We have both of these, and I agree with you about Nausicaa, absolutly stunning. Thanks for the heads up on the Dirty pair movies Project Eden is the only one I've seen. How is the Original Dirty Pair TV series? I've only seen a few episodes. I'll reccomend we finish getting Wolf's Rain. Another Branch has the first, but I don't know if they plan on getting the rest. Last three will be added to the list. God I can't believe I forgot the Penis Mines! My memory is like a sieve.

Very much aware of Takahashi. But we already have Ranma 1/2 in the system. It's actually the only coloring incident(funny story, the kids librarian tried to censor it. Might have worked had she not used a highlighter. ). Same thing with Sailor Moon already got it.

Our graphic novel selection is fairly lax. Hell we let Vol 1 of Bastard! slip in. My job as far as that goes is to filter out pure porn and make sure we get it into the right section. I.E. Children's - Young Adult - Adult. I will forward recomendations Tozetre.

There's some exploding heads and bathing scenes.

Ya know I've been meaning to look into those since I saw the movies, but I just haven't gotten around to it. Are they just a novel series or is there a manga series as well?

this has nothing to do about censoring and stuff but are u sure that putting Gundam Original series there is good?
i mean unless the people who visit are Gundam fans i can't even imagine ppl under 20 yrs old would watch it, let alone 15 year olds

FMP fumoffu does have an episode where most of the girls are naked although humorusly blocking the 'good' bits... maybe someone should look at it and think if its appropriate or not

If you're looking for GNs for the adults to enjoy, I'd recommend the following mostly for the literal value they have. The arts great too.

The Authority
Batman: Dark Knight Returns
Batman: Year One
Batman: Long Halloween
Books of Magic
Crisis on Infinite Earths
Daredevil: Visionaries
Death: High Cost of Living
Death: Time of Your Life
Ex Machina
Fables
Green Arrow: Quiver
Infinite Crisis
Justice League: Year One
Kabuki
Kingdom Come
Leaque of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Marvel's Origin
Planetary
Preacher
Sandman
Starman
Transmetropolitan
Watchmen
Y The Last Man

Granted some are for mature audiences, namely Transmet, Leaque, Preacher, and Kabuki for sure, but there's also literary value in each either in author (Daredevil & Green Arrow), content (Sandman, Books of Magic, Kingdom Come), or subject (Fables, Planetary, Leaque). They also have significance in GN literary history either in writing, art, or in the history of comic books.

Tenryu - You have a valid point with that. I really want it in there because it is a classic of that genre. Besides the gaming/anime/comic fans in this area are at that age where they're getting married and having little fans of their own so...

Also thanks for the heads up. Looks like I need to schedule another marathon run of my collection to make sure I haven't completely missed any more trouble spots.

DraxelBethlehem - Well after comparing that list with what we have in our database, it looks we have all of them except Starman and Kabuki. So I'll forward them to the boss.

that maybe so but still not everyone can appreciate old cartoons/anime... for myself i wouldn't have watch Mobile Suit Gundam if i wasn't so keen on watching every Gundam series there is

and then there was this time my brother got the english dubbed Voltes V.. i barely managed to watch the first episode

but i don't see why not you can't add Zeta Gundam to the list, tv series or compilation movie.. should be good for the 15 yrs olds

Turn A Gundam's good also.. of course there are also mild nude scenes in a few episodes

and the reason why you should get Avatar http://youtube.com/watch?v=EiPqWy8ibA4 because the people are crazy and try to imitate the jap waaay too much

Serial Experiments Lain

*edit*

Honestly, Avatar is better than 90% of the Anime I've seen over the past couple years. And that is more than a little bit of anime.

Tenryu - Again you have a valid point. But like I said it is a classic, and personally I would like to have it available for any who want to watch. You are also right in that there is no reason(aside from my own forgetfulness  ) to not add Zeta or Turn A (with a review tag). Also Eureka 7 will be added.

On a side note, Voltes V... yeah that didn't age well. Few super robot shows do. Although they are good for a laugh every now and again.

-B- - Serial Experiments Lain will be added.

Also would just like to say that Avatar is already in the system, I believe I stated that a few posts back. I also want everyone to keep in mind that while I have to take the 15 and under crowd into consideration they aren't the only ones that this list is for.
