Well, depends on what you're interested in. Political and religious discussion is in the Rants area, and is pretty extensive even after most of the flamewars are deleted.
Light-hearted stuff you can find in Trial By Fire and Omnimedia. Current Events tries to bring news snippits relevant to the WAR's users into the open, and sometimes generates a lot of discussion. For Fanfic and writing, General Fanfiction and Creative Works are the place to go.
Beyond that, just take a look at some of the bigger threads or anything stickied, and you'll get caught up to speed so to speak pretty easily.
