*I'll get to some more combat speak later, first I have an introduction to make.*

Gentlemen, let me introduce our new Ground Force commander... General TedC. He'll be helping us coordinate operations on the ground. With our air and naval forces. I expect you guys to make him feel welcome. (TRANSLATION: Let the Hazing Begin!)

"Welcome aboard, GRUNT 6! Quick questions:

1) Why hasn't BROADSWORD assaulted yet?

2) Where are we on EAGLE SWOOP?

3) What's strength, state of equipage, and training on the Elvish Scouts, and how long before they're ready to stand up on their own?

[aside to the J-4] BTW, Loggie, where do we stand on getting my light infantry battalion's worth of equipment sets for BROTHER'S BACK?

<reply to SysOp's interjection> Shake'n'Bake, baby! Shake 'n' effin-bake!

[technical note: a "Shake'n'Bake" is old-school Ordnance slang for an Alpha Strike mission where we mix 500 lb bombs with napalm canisters in equal proportions. Really good for ruining the othe3r guy's whole day... ]

BROADSWORD
I am still awaiting the status update reports myself. I am not exactly sure what assets are in place. We will need to secure the ring of Isengard as well as put the commando team on top of the tower. Does the chemical weapons ban prevent the use of things like tear gas? Cause I'd like anyone who happens to still be inside coughing and wheezing as the team works their way down. I'd also like any intel from our Elvish allies about what the current owner is likely to be able to do; he is reportedly some kind of wizard, after all.

FREYA'S BASKET
Do we have any intel on the enemy forces operating in the Shire? Can we get some of our Elvish scouts in their to establish contact with the legitimate government? We don't want friendlies knifing us in the back because they think we're the bad guys. Are there local forces that will be able to maintain order if we knock down the hostiles and then split?

We won't want to maintain any longer a supply line than necessary for this operation. We have a very limited operating range away from the coast. I would recommend a full battalion with air and armored support to take control quickly, but keeping that fueled will be a bear.

Key Current Operations:

Operation FREYA'S BASKET: The assault on Isengard.

Friendly Forces assigned: Combat Team BROADSWORD - one (1) Marine Expeditionary Unit, reinforced by a Troop of Armored Cavalry.

Successfully conducted amphibious landing at the Isen River delta, moved up the Isen valley to their current attack position on the reverse slopes just below the military crest of the hills west of Isengard. This movement was concurrent with completed Operation THOR'S HAMMER, an Alpha Strike from the Nimitz Carrier Air Wing on Isengard's fortifications. They are presently awaiting a "GO" order to assault according to the following attack plan:
Yours Truly wrote:
Outstanding. And BROADSWORD has a Marine Expeditionary Unit with a composite squadron built around medium-lift CH-46's, and they've already had one of their rifle companies fall in on the helos as air-mobile infantry. And I like the intel we got from the Scouts.

Operational Concept: Unless otherwise directed, BROADSWORD Six will conduct movement-to-contact to the Final Assault Position just below the military crest of the last hill west of the fortress as the BUFF ArcLights the tower one more time (It never hurts to kick a little harder than you think you have to, and if anything's still alive in there, I want to give it a fresh headache). Once the rubble quits bouncing, Alpha and Bravo companies, 1st Bn, 8th Marines, accompanied by Echo Troop, 2nd Squadron, 2nd ACR, will assault through the fortress and surrounding area, consolidating just east of the outer ring. Charlie One-Eight will conduct a heliborne assault to clear the tower of any and all surviving hostiles. They will not occupy it. Once they have cleared the tower, the Headquarters company engineer section will mine and boobytrap it, just in case the enemy tries some goofy teleportation spell or whatever to re-occupy it. (Nothing says, "Keep out!" like Claymores and Toe-poppers!)

Supporting fires: The MEU's Whiskey-Cobra detachment will be in direct support of Charlie 1/8. VMA-223 Det Bravo (the Harrier detachment) will be in direct support of Alpha and Bravo 1/8, and Echo 2nd-to-the-2nd. How Battery will be available but the Forward Observer and Forward Air Controller will coordinate to deconflict artillery and air - last thing we need is to have a '46 fly into an artillery sheaf.

Assault goes at the earliest opportunity. BROADSWORD Six will be with the mech team.

Operation MALAYAN EMERGENCY: Noncombatant Evacuation Operation

2nd Bn, 27th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division (Tropic Lightning) is providing security in the area of Forlond for embarcation of Elves evacuating to Westreach Island aboard USNS Arctic. After Arctic unloads supplies at LogBase Alpha (Operation FULL BELLIES), she picks up evacuees at Forlond and steams west. This Operation is being run in conjunction with -

Operation BROTHER'S BACK: Logistical support for organizing, training, and equipping local forces

The Special Forces A-Team is working with those Elves who wish to stay and fight, forming an organization tentatively called "The Elvish Scouts" Thus far, a small element has already taken the field as pathfinders (see below). Logistic elements are providing additional support to this effort; we are awaiting word from Westreach as to whether we will be able to produce weapons and equipment sets for at least a light infantry battalion of indigenous personnel within an acceptable timeframe.

Operation EAGLE SWOOP: Liberation of The Shire

Intel reports a small band of hostiles as running roughshod over the residents (See ATC's Intel Briefing). We currently are planning EAGLE SWOOP in three phases:

Phase I: HOPSCOTCH - establish forward operating base at Mithlond and Forward LZ / Forward Area Refueling Point in the hills west of Tuckborough to stage the Air Assault Company for an attack into The Shire. Elvish Scouts have already started to infiltrate to act as pathfinders.

Phase II: GHOST - SF A-Team inserts into the Shire to locate the enemy forces for our attack. Maximal stealth - avoid contact or detection.

Phase III: MAYAGUEZ - The SF Team will destroy the enemy band, backed up by the Air Assault Company and the Apache Longbow detachment. If feasible, additional support from the A-10 detachment. Team commander's discretion on Phase III OpPlan

That concludes this presentation of current and ongoing operations

BROADSWORD
Not wanting the inhabitants of that tower to regain their footing, they are "GO" to insert the assault team at the top of the tower while the rest of the force provides support from the ground. Isengard is to be systematically cleared and secured. Any living occupants found are to be treated with extreme caution.

We're still hoping for some intel from our Elvish allies on what to expect; any information received will be relayed to the assault team immediately.

EAGLE SWOOP: HOPSCOTCH
Awaiting word that forward base at Mithlond is operational.

EAGLE SWOOP: GHOST
Special Forces are "Go" for night insertion by helicopter in the shire. Team should maintain radio contact, as hostile forces reportedly have no ability to detect or intercept transmissions.

EAGLE SWOOP: MAYAGUEZ
Awaiting "Ready" notice from forward base and intel from Ghost.

Latest Air Report.

At 2300 hours... Squadron deployment from Westreach is as follows.

F-16s, A-10s, and B-1b Lancer flying northeast with KC-10 tanker escort towards SB ALPHA for primary staging. AC-130 flying with second tanker escort filled with non-standard cargo supplies.

BUFF flying due east on attack course. ETA six hours to Isenguard first staging point. Bombing run will be executed immediately once bomber on station. BROADSWORD instructed to maintain distance until Arclight is confirmed visually and BUFF has left the vicinity.

*For Ted: BUFF is B-52 H Stratofortress. Arclight, is a seriously overkill bombing run.*

BROADSWORD holding position until the kaboom stops.

Any further intel on the inhabitants of that tower in Isenguard?

Okay, intel report.

The wizzard in the tower is named Saruman The White. A really old, really powerful wizzard. However he has been idle for an extremely long time, asside from amassing that army we just fragged.

Word also has it that his voice is a powerful weapon. Broadsword should be advised upon mission begin, that if Saruman is encountered alive, he should be approached with extreme caution, and forbiddon to speak. If he is taken alive, he is to be bound and gagged, and all guards are to be fully briefed.

BUFF is currently on position to target... ARCLIGHT on schedule...

***OPERATIONAL ORDERS FROM JTF***

Saruman is to be shot on sight. His personal abilities make him more dangerous than a suicide bomber.

Roger, we'll need descriptors, photos, etc, for target ID. Break.

For BROADSWORD Six, BROADSWORD Charlie Six, BROADSWORD Charlie 1-6, 2-6, 3-6. Recommend aggressive clearance on the tower - have your fireteams frag each room, then hose it down. Max destructiveness, take no chances - I'd rather explain dead prisoners to NCA than dead Marines to their parents.

Yeah, just kill everyone, much simpler.

Oh, unless they're locked in cells or something.

BROADSWORD ASSAULT TEAM

The team is not to attempt any communication with tower occupants. If found incapacitated, they are to be bound, gagged, searched, and relieved of any items they may be carrying. If found awake, take no risks: just shoot them. Given the report about his voice, I'd like about half the team to have comm headphones on, just to be safe.

Concur.

[checks time]

And now we wait... The BUFF ought to be pickling his load any minute now...

BUFF reports ordinance has been picked, veering off to fly to Forlindon. Looks like the load hit the mark... awaiting ground reports.

EI says Saruman is described as an old man in a cloak. If the place was full of orks... Any signs of Saruman alive will probably be along the lines of the only crotchety old man you'll be likely to find in that tower.

Be advised also... EI reports that an object called a Palantir may be in there. For safety reasons, if anyone finds a smooth jet-black orb... they are ordered under penalty of court-martial not to look into the orb, and to cover it IMMEDATELY. We weren't told the details, just that there's a high potential threat from it. It must remain undisturbed until an expert in such things can check it out. In this case, one of the friendly wizzards or a high ranking Elf Lord.

RELAYING TO BROADSWORD

Wizard Saruman may attempt to pass himself off as an old man. Make no assumptions about anyone encountered: the "shoot if found conscious" order still stands.

Relaying the description of this "Palantir". If found, throw a bag over it and tie it up: treat as hazardous material.

Have we got an ID on any of these friendly wizards or other elves? Does EI have any means of contacting them?

In any case, the operation is clear to begin when the dust settles.

No, recommend "GO" order immediately - BROADSWORD is already cocked and locked at the Line of Departure, and the dust'll settle as they close in. Better if our people are on top of them as fast as possible. I don't want to give the hostiles any chance of coming to while our people are still in the middle of that flat damn' pool table surrounding the objective.

"GO" it is. All they were really waiting for is the helo to warm up and the smoke to clear enough for the pilot to see. The ground support will start moving in right away.
